"The Music of Quebec"

A six week "ethnomusicology" course in which students learn to "fiddle" French Acadian fiddle tunes. This is an intense program in which the student does reading research, develops an Acadian or Mιtis character, writes a story about the character, learns French and Ojibway words, researches the foods which are prepared for a picnic which is held along with a performance at the end of the course. Each student makes a costume and gives a final performance in which the character is acted out at the "Bloomington River Rendezvous," historical re-enactment event.

There is a part II and III to this program also, which goes into the story of French Fur Traders from Quebec, Canada, and then the third program covers the Louisiana Purchase.  The students learn so much from this style of teaching.  Any teacher who is interested in this program for their own students, please contact Sharon Dee for information.
